The Department of Environment and Forest, Government of NCT of Delhi, is organizing Plantation Drive at Najafgarh Drain (Chawla Village) on 28th June, 2008, 10.30 A.M. Hon’ble Chief Minister will be the Chief Guest.

Monsoon Wooding and and its volunteers have been invited by the Department to join this plantation.

It would fantastic if we could contribute to this plantation and the best way to do that is to gather in large numbers! Please do extend your support to this cause and join the Government in its efforts to compensate for Delhi's depleting green reserves.

Its our chance to save our city!
Vasant Kunj Plantation

On Saturday, 21st June, Monsoon Wooding undertook its 2nd Plantation Drive of 2008. It turned out even better than the Wooders had hoped for and we were successful in planting a staggering 200 trees!

25 Wooders gathered in Rockview Apartments, B2, Vasant Kunj to commence the arduous task of digging 200 plots, planting 200 trees and fabricating 200 tree guards. It wasn't all work though, the entire event was loads of fun!

We began prepping the park on Friday itself by de-weeding and digging as many plots as possible. The Wooders did everything themselves including unloading 40ft of manure from a truck.

Monsoon Wooding has also hired a gardener to take care of these saplings in the crucial first few months. These trees are being looked after well as we scout for new locations to plant in!
Sapling Distribution No.3

Monsoon Wooding undertook its third successful sapling distribution drive in the Defense Colony Market on 16th June.

We had 20 eager volunteers ready to mobilize support among the shoppers. We distributed over 100 pots of lavender and kofia! The response was good and we received much encouragement.

Another NGO, Katha, has agreed to lend help, monetary and otherwise, to the Monsoon Wooding compaign. Their encouragement has bolstered our confidence and we are planning our future events with even more enthusiasm than before.

At this time, everyone can help in their own way. We need to plant 3000 trees in Delhi, our immediate concern is figuring out where. While we have a few areas in mind, it would be tremendous help if everyone could scout for arable land.

Keep an eye out!

The Story of Stuff exposes the connections between a huge number of environmental and social issues, and calls us together to create a more sustainable and just world. It'll teach you something, it'll make you laugh, and it just may change the way you look at all the stuff in your life forever."

Swechha has organized a screening of this enlightening documentary at its office (B-1/46, Malviya Nagar) on Saturday, 14 June, 3.00 p.m. onwards. This documentary will be the springboard to launch a very interesting discussion on consumerism and its effects on our environment. With volunteers as passionate and opinionated as us, this discussion is bound to throw up many interesting points of view.

Don't miss it, be there!
First Successful Wooding!

Monsoon Wooding and Accenture teamed up on Saturday, 7th of June to plant 47 trees in Maharaja Agrasena Park. This was Monsoon Wooding's first plantation in 2008 and the turnout was brilliant. Over 30 enthusiastic Wooders joined hands to convert the decrepit wasteland into a green oasis.

The work began as early as 2nd of June when 7 volunteers took up the tough task of cleaning the park and making it fit for de-weeding. From polybags to clothes, we discarded a LOT of stuff!
De-weeding and digging was undertaken on the 4th and 15 volunteers were partners in getting muddy!

At 8 am in the morning on Saturday, the 'greening' commenced! It wasn't easy work, but it was a lot of fun. The Wooders did everything themselves, from digging plots to making tree-guards out of bamboo and wire mesh! It is a mark of the Wooders fervor that the entire drive was done in less than 3 hours!

The impact was immediate. We had support coming in from the local residents and government officials. The RWA of Green Park Extension is completely on board with our campaign. Even the MCD has sent in caretakers and is willing to regulate the water supply to the Park.

The work is not over though. We have to have all engines firing to meet our target of 3000 trees this monsoon and would appreciate all the help we can get. Delhi would appreciate it too.

Imagine Maharaja Agrasena Park 20 years later, it will be worth the toil!

Yamunostav is an annual celebration of World Environment Day organized by Swechha. This year, it was hosted in partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks at India Habitat Center.

Monsoon Wooding was a big part of this event and we distributed 400 trees! The event was a confluence of music, art and innovation. The music was spell bounding with artists like Raghu Dixshit, Valentine Shipley(Parikrama & Silk Route), Rahul Ram(Indian Ocean) and Surojit Dev (Them Clones) performing. Speeches by Ms. Sunita Narain( Director of the Centre and the director of the Society for Environmental Communications) and Ms. Meena Gupta(Secretary, MOEF) it re-enforced the importance of our environment in the minds of the entire crowd.

Monsoon Wooding spread the word about all their activities on this day and gathered even more Wooders!

Monsoon Wooding is all geared up for its first plantation drive of 2008!

The target area is Maharaja Agrasena Park in Green Park Market. On the 7th June, Swechha and Monsoon Wooding would like the support of all their volunteers as we aim to plant over 50 trees! This plantation also has the support of Accenture and its employees who will join in the planting process.

The park is barren and littered. A few Wooders have been on a cleaning mission and the park is being readied for new plantations.

Please lend us your hands and show your solidarity with Delhi!

Friday's event was fantastic!

Watching 'Wasted', the journey of our city's waste, was really eye-opening. The movie had a huge impact and was followed by a discussion on Delhi's poorly executed waste disposal system. As discussions often do, it led the Wooders into an interesting conversation about several things including the true meaning of 'Urban Development'.

Is a city developed when it has posh societies, tall buildings and rich citizens even though it has no place to put all the waste generated by them?

As time flew by, all the volunteers moved to Khan Market to begin our second de-nailing drive. Like the last one it had great impact! the volunteers attacked all the nail and copper with much enthusiasm and the trees around Khan Market were proudly declared nail-free!
