Diospyros, Sheeham, Alistonia and Peepul are some of the trees we planted.
We are planning our next De-nailing Drive soon, but we need Volunteers to write to us to tell us suitable Dates and Venues where trees need our attention. Write in to us at monsoonwooding@gmail.com or call at 26671758.

Monsoon Wooding and and its volunteers have been invited by the Department to join this plantation.
It would fantastic if we could contribute to this plantation and the best way to do that is to gather in large numbers! Please do extend your support to this cause and join the Government in its efforts to compensate for Delhi's depleting green reserves.
Its our chance to save our city!
25 Wooders gathered in Rockview Apartments, B2, Vasant Kunj to commence the arduous task of digging 200 plots, planting 200 trees and fabricating 200 tree guards. It wasn't all work though, the entire event was loads of fun!
We began prepping the park on Friday itself by de-weeding and digging as many plots as possible. The Wooders did everything themselves including unloading 40ft of manure from a truck.
Monsoon Wooding has also hired a gardener to take care of these saplings in the crucial first few months. These trees are being looked after well as we scout for new locations to plant in!
We had 20 eager volunteers ready to mobilize support among the shoppers. We distributed over 100 pots of lavender and kofia! The response was good and we received much encouragement.
Another NGO, Katha, has agreed to lend help, monetary and otherwise, to the Monsoon Wooding compaign. Their encouragement has bolstered our confidence and we are planning our future events with even more enthusiasm than before.
At this time, everyone can help in their own way. We need to plant 3000 trees in Delhi, our immediate concern is figuring out where. While we have a few areas in mind, it would be tremendous help if everyone could scout for arable land.
Keep an eye out!

Swechha has organized a screening of this enlightening documentary at its office (B-1/46, Malviya Nagar) on Saturday, 14 June, 3.00 p.m. onwards. This documentary will be the springboard to launch a very interesting discussion on consumerism and its effects on our environment. With volunteers as passionate and opinionated as us, this discussion is bound to throw up many interesting points of view.
Don't miss it, be there!
The work began as early as 2nd of June when 7 volunteers took up the tough task of cleaning the park and making it fit for de-weeding. From polybags to clothes, we discarded a LOT of stuff!
De-weeding and digging was undertaken on the 4th and 15 volunteers were partners in getting muddy!
At 8 am in the morning on Saturday, the 'greening' commenced! It wasn't easy work, but it was a lot of fun. The Wooders did everything themselves, from digging plots to making tree-guards out of bamboo and wire mesh! It is a mark of the Wooders fervor that the entire drive was done in less than 3 hours!
The impact was immediate. We had support coming in from the local residents and government officials. The RWA of Green Park Extension is completely on board with our campaign. Even the MCD has sent in caretakers and is willing to regulate the water supply to the Park.
The work is not over though. We have to have all engines firing to meet our target of 3000 trees this monsoon and would appreciate all the help we can get. Delhi would appreciate it too.
Imagine Maharaja Agrasena Park 20 years later, it will be worth the toil!
Monsoon Wooding was a big part of this event and we distributed 400 trees! The event was a confluence of music, art and innovation. The music was spell bounding with artists like Raghu Dixshit, Valentine Shipley(Parikrama & Silk Route), Rahul Ram(Indian Ocean) and Surojit Dev (Them Clones) performing. Speeches by Ms. Sunita Narain( Director of the Centre and the director of the Society for Environmental Communications) and Ms. Meena Gupta(Secretary, MOEF) it re-enforced the importance of our environment in the minds of the entire crowd.
Monsoon Wooding spread the word about all their activities on this day and gathered even more Wooders!
The target area is Maharaja Agrasena Park in Green Park Market. On the 7th June, Swechha and Monsoon Wooding would like the support of all their volunteers as we aim to plant over 50 trees! This plantation also has the support of Accenture and its employees who will join in the planting process.
The park is barren and littered. A few Wooders have been on a cleaning mission and the park is being readied for new plantations.
Please lend us your hands and show your solidarity with Delhi!
Watching 'Wasted', the journey of our city's waste, was really eye-opening. The movie had a huge impact and was followed by a discussion on Delhi's poorly executed waste disposal system. As discussions often do, it led the Wooders into an interesting conversation about several things including the true meaning of 'Urban Development'.
Is a city developed when it has posh societies, tall buildings and rich citizens even though it has no place to put all the waste generated by them?
As time flew by, all the volunteers moved to Khan Market to begin our second de-nailing drive. Like the last one it had great impact! the volunteers attacked all the nail and copper with much enthusiasm and the trees around Khan Market were proudly declared nail-free!
We will screen "Wasted", an award winning short film made by Swechha We For Change, at the Swechha office :3rd floor, B1/46, Malviya Nagar.
All interested, please come to the office at 2 pm.
Following the screening, all volunteers will move to Khan Market to begin our 2nd de-nailing drive.
We hope that it will be as or even more successful than the G.K. drive!
Do come!
Buoyed by the success of the De-nailing Drive at GK I, the Wooders congregated at the Swechha office on 19 May to discuss the future course of the Monsoon Wooding campaign.
It was decided that the next event will be held at Khan Market on 24 May. Along with de-nailing the trees in the vicinity, the Wooders will also give out approximately 200 saplings of Golden Duranda amongst several other varities of leafy plants.

Wooders With the Saplings

Getting Ready to Sell

De-nailing in progress

Fighting 'Plier' and Nail!

A Tree to Lean on...
Monsoon Wooding launched its first de-nailing drive on the 16th of May, in and around the M block market in GK I.

Our first target was a nasty barbed fence wound around several Ashoka trees. The bark of the tree had grown around the wire and it was so entrenched that taking it out took more than an hour. While a group worked on these trees, the rest of us spread out to go further into the residential parts of that area.
We encountered challenges of varying degrees from 6 inch nails to resilient posters, but we received tremendous help from shopkeepers, taxi drivers and auto rickshaw drivers.

We met after our de-nailing efforts in the market's central park and proceeded to give out our token saplings and spread the word. The GK shoppers were very supportive and we were soon out of plants!
It turned out to be an excellent event with a lot of support from volunteers and concerned citizens of Delhi!
It was heartening to see that despite the heat, around 25 enthusiastic volunteers turned up to brainstorm on how to initiate the campaign and take it forward.
After everyone introduced themselves, Vimlendu (Founder & Executive Director, Swechha) initiated the discussion by briefing everyone about the salient features and purpose of Monsoon Wooding.
The meeting concluded on a high note with promises of support and active participation by all those present there.
‘There is so no such thing as a free lunch.’ One of the basic tenets of Economics (implying that there is an opportunity cost attached to everything); this is epitomized in the rapid infrastructure development Delhi is witnessing at the moment. The Delhi Metro, preparations for the Commonwealth Games, construction of flyovers, are a step in the right direction towards making Delhi a world class city. But, this comes at a HUGE cost.
29, 360 trees have been felled so far to make way for the Delhi Metro. 7, 508 are about to meet the same fate. Delhi’s green cover is 10.2%, way below the minimum requirement of 33%. There is only one tree left for every 350 people in Delhi.
In an attempt to restore Delhi’s green cover, Monsoon Wooding was launched in 2005 by Sweccha-We for Change foundation. It aims to bring together volunteers who wish to see Delhi’s tree cover expand and to give them a platform to realize their plans.
Our course of action is outlined by the 3 P’s:
PLANT – anywhere, everywhere!
PROTECT – trees that have been reduced to billboards.
PROMOTE – tree welfare, because knowledge is power!
Through our initiatives we plan to achieve the following –
2. Saving existing trees from dying out and ensuring their protection.
3. Sensitizing the youth and the rest of the civil society of Delhi about the seriousness of Delhi’s depleting green cover.
4. Building a huge network of young volunteers who are ready to come forward and participate in similar environmental campaigns as and when the need arises.
5. Attracting the State’s attention towards the efforts of young people and convincing it to take necessary steps to create a greener Delhi.
2. Adopt a tree and save it from damage such as nailing, tiling and concretization around its bark.
3. Tell us of areas where trees are under duress and help restore the damage by funding a tree plantation.
4. Be aware and spread awareness!
Nailing trees harms trees in more than one way. Nails harm tissues that are responsible for transporting water and nutrients. They also open up wounds that are extremely susceptible to pests. Also, copper from the nail gets converted to copper sulphate which is extremely poisonous for the tree.
You will find many such trees in commercial areas like GK and Green Park where advertisements have been hung from trees. We plan to go and denail such trees and in the process spread awareness about this issue.
2. Planting trees.
To make up for the shocking number of trees that have been cut down, we plan to carry out the following:
1. Plantation Drives: In the Delhi Ridge, in school and college campuses, in local parks, etc. In short, anywhere and everywhere
2. Creation of Model Parks: Most localities in Delhi have neglected playgrounds and land lying waste. We will transform them into lush & innerving centers of greenery.
3. Creation of Oxygen Belts: Rubbish Heaps are an eyesore. So, to remedy that we will garner large numbers and convert these into thriving oxygen belts.
